One of the early 2000s biggest Europop bands is staging its massive tour comeback. Aqua, the acclaimed pop heads behind the addictive smash hit "Barbie Girl" is hopping on its newest Barbie Girl World Tour. Having explored life in plastic for over 25 years as its iconic hit became a global club anthem, the band is back, taking its Europop bangers back to the live stage.
25 years since the release of "Barbie Girl" off of their record-breaking debut LP "Aquarium", the band's hits continue to command dancefloors around the globe. From clubs, bars, DJ remixes, RuPaul's Drag Race performances, and pop star samples, they've definitely won the plastic world's hearts. Though Ava Max might not be your Barbie Girl, Aqua's track definitely slayed in her reimagined take on that fantastic world of plastic.
"We always dreamt big, but never this big," frontwoman Nystrøm shared with MTV News. Aqua soon became Denmark's most successful band and achieved what most Europop acts couldn't at the time. They took critics and listeners by surprise when their debut LP "Aquarium" carried its #1 hit single "Barbie Girl", topping the charts in Denmark, Australia, the UK, and other European countries, and the Top 10 on the US Billboard Hot 100.
"We hoped we were going to make it in Denmark and maybe Norway and Sweden, but I don’t think anybody really would’ve expected that it would go this far and that hard," Nystrøm added.
As the band announced its massive comeback tour, "AMERICA… You wanna go for a ride?" the band asked on social media. It's definitely gonna be one sweet heck of a ride!
As the Barbie movie fever shoots even higher, Aqua's feature track with Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice continues to command every dancefloor with their hit radio bop "Barbie World".
Beyond that life in plastic, Aqua led a multitude of dancefloor hits in the coming years including "Doctor Jones", "Turn Back Time", "Back to the 80s", "Good Morning Sunshine", and "Lollipop (Candyman)" that shaped a generation of Europop party people.
Though she's largely associated with her "Barbie Girl" persona back in the day, Nystrøm rebelled against stereotypes and expectations of people around her. "That made me kind of rebellious, actually," she told Nylon in an interview. "I turned into this rock chick just to kind-of be on the opposite side of whatever people wanted me to look like." She's a free woman!
